This research is an effort to learn about and acknowledge Christ Church’s involvement with slavery, as part of a larger movement to explore entanglements with slavery and its legacies by the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, Harvard University, and other local institutions and organizations.

HERE LIES DARBY VASSALL is not meant to be a singular event – it builds on Christ Church’s commitment to racial justice. In June 2022, the Vestry voted to appoint a committee to study and recommend reparative actions. The following month, Ted Hammett, Co-Facilitator of the Racial Justice Group and long-time Christ Church parishioner, gave a sermon about the HERE LIES DARBY VASSALL project. As a response to the research presented here, Christ Church has committed to revising the parish history on its website.
